Songs of Absence

‘Songs of Absence” is a segment of my serial performance project, No Man’s Land. It is based on the character Lavinia in Shakespeare’s Titus Andronicus. Lavinia, the virtuous daughter of the Roman general Titus, is raped and then hung from a dead tree trunk in a cycle of revenge. She is stripped of her most fundamental human ability – communication. Starting from the aftermath of the event, I intend to convey her response to the violence through silence in my performance “Songs of Absence”. I try to highlight this seemingly paradoxical power of Lavinia’s silence.
