Explore Sydney Waterfront District to discover more than 40 installations and performances by artists from Cape Breton and beyond. Witness the intersection of Cape Breton’s diverse forms of cultural expression in a fun, family-friendly event that will delight the senses and engage the body and mind.


Thursday Sept. 21, 2017

Opening Reception

4:00-5:00PM | St Patrick’s Museum, 87 Esplanade, Sydney

Everyone is invited to the Festival’s opening reception welcoming artists, audiences, community and government partners to Lumière 2017.


Film Screening

Highland Arts Theatre, 40 Bentinck St, Sydney

7:00PM Canadian Shorts Film Screening (programmed by Nelson MacDonald)

8:30PM We Have An Anchor (feature film, dir. Jem Cohen)

Film screening featuring a Canadian short films encompassing award-winning animation, drama, science fiction, documentary and experimental works. Followed by Jem Cohen’s feature, WE HAVE AN ANCHOR, a documentary-based, interdisciplinary project based on footage he gathered in Nova Scotia and Cape Breton over 10 years. The project features film clips and texts ranging from poems and folklore to scientific research and local news items, and scored by a supergroup of Cohen’s previous collaborators including: Efrim Menuck and Jessica Moss of Thee Silver Mt. Zion, alongside Guy Picciotto (Fugazi), Jim White (Dirty Three), T. Griffin (The Quavers) and Mary Margaret O’Hara. This event is free and open to the public. Director in attendance.

Lumière Artist Talks

Hear Lumière artists speak about their work and artistic process during the Lumière Artist Talks. Speakers include: visiting artist Tonia Di Risio, local artists Mel Kearney and Nelson MacDonald, and Halifax-based artist collective At The Reception. This event is free and open to the public.

Community Lantern Workshops

Make Lumière magic. Visit a local CBRL branch and create a lantern to carry in the Lumière Art-At-Night Opening Parade. Workshops are free. All materials will be provided.

Food-making Café

Make tomato sauce for the Lumière Arts Festival’s Food/Communities Project. Contact to register. This event is part of a wider project organized by CBU’s Cooperative Study Club addressing issues around food security and community building.

Handmade Pasta Workshop and Supper
